As Captain James Cook moved north,
navigating the Australian coast became increasingly demanding, day by
day sightings of the reefs were more frequent. North of Cape Grafton
became his worst nightmare. "The Reef Closed in" the
"Barrier Reef aptly named. Eventually the Endeavour was holed badly
and repairs were made in what is known today as Cooktown.
Continuing north to
Lizard Island and the open sea, only then did he realise the extent of
the reef system and the natural "barrier" it formed. That reef is know
known as "The Great Barrier Reef" and is truly one of
the great wonders of the world, A virtual maze of reefs, islands and
coral cays stretching for more than 2000 kilometres along the
Queensland coast of Australia.
